Portview achieve BREEAM Excellent for Samsung KX

The new Samsung brand experience space in King’s Cross awarded BREEAM ‘excellent’ for its high sustainability credentials

The new Samsung brand experience has become the first building in the Coal Drops Yard development to be awarded BREEAM ‘excellent’ for its high sustainability credentials.

BREEAM ‘excellent’ is an international standard reserved for only the top 10% of new non-domestic buildings, which demonstrate a holistic approach to sustainability throughout each stage of construction - from health and wellbeing, to energy, water and material usage.

Fit-out and project managed by Portview, the 20,000 sq ft space features a plethora of innovative design firsts, including a 10-metre-wide curved screen and a curved architectural lighting frame embedded within the sales floor.

The sheer size of the space required huge amounts of skill and effort from over 600 project team members to coordinate the installation of bespoke fixtures and materials. The holistic approach resulted in a 72% excellent score from BREEAM - surpassing the initial target of 55% set by the client.

Simon Campbell, Managing Director of Portview, said:

“The ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating is a testament to not only our high environmental standards, but our ability to go over and beyond what is expected to deliver quality and value.

“From start to finish, we ensured that every member of the project team understood the BREEAM requirements and felt motivated to deliver sustainable project goals that would reduce our carbon footprint significantly.”

Portview and the wider project team introduced a number of environmental solutions to the design and fit-out of Samsung KX, including the standardisation of materials and the prefabrication of specific elements to help reduce overall project waste.

Another key consideration was to create an ambient space that would pay homage to the natural environment and inspire those who visit. This was aided by ample natural light and stunning views overlooking the Coal Drops Yard, with floor to ceiling glazing that spans the entire façade. Inside, the space is carefully detailed with premium finishes such as porcelain flooring, a custom engineered steel roof, solid oak furniture, and aluminium mosaic tiles, to give it a distinct edge.

Samsung KX also features a prominent crystal acrylic installation from Korean designer, Saerom Yoon, representing the brand’s heritage in Seoul. The ‘Blue Pillar’ design, purposefully replicates a watercolour painting through carefully selected gradient tones and natural textures.

Commenting on the project’s success, Tanya Weller, Director of Samsung Showcase, KX, said:

“Samsung KX represents the future of retail, and this of course begins with the construction of the space itself. The iconic structure and unique design of the building is testament to the incredible efforts delivered by our partners, all who helped us achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating that exemplifies a true home of innovation, and will inspire for years to come.”
